Travelodge to give Crufts dogs their own beds

Dogs travelling to Crufts will be able to maximise on their beauty sleep as the hotel chain Travelodge will be giving them their very own beds.

The show, which opens in Birmingham's NEC on Thursday, is expected to attract thousands of competitors and many will stay nearby during the four-day event.

Travelodge, the budget hotel chain, has announced that it will offer king size beds complete with mattresses, pillow and duvet in some of its locations in addition to the less luxurious standard baskets.

The firm, usually associated with offering cheap and cheerful accommodation, said it expected more than 300 dogs and their owners to be staying at their hotels over the course of the competition.

Leigh McCarron, the Travelodge sleep director said: "Crufts is a big occasion in the dog calendar and we want to acknowledge the importance of this event."

"Therefore we have extended our range of pooch beds to ensure our two- and four-legged customers get their beauty sleep in order to look and feel their best for the big occasion."

In recent years the event, which is the world's largest dog show, has been accused of becoming too glamourous with many Hollywood-style pets on show who are 'all teeth and hair'.

A relaxation of the quarantine laws in 2001 means that many more American competitors now travel to the event.
